SOMERSET ARCHAEOLOGY FORTNIGHT
Family events & activities.
For several years, the Council for British Archaeology has organised a National
Archaeology Weekend. In Somerset. Museums are invited to stage special displays;
individuals or organisations organise walks, site-visits andftalks.

Dulverton Library An exhibition and demonstration of Online access to archaeological
information in Somerset.
HAWKCOMBE HEAD OPEN DAY Hawkcombe Head nr. Porlock
(SS844457)11am - 3pm This is the third season of excavation of the site at
Hawkcombe Head. A large collection of flint tools have been recovered from
the site, which are diagnostic of the late Mesolithic period. There is evidence
of a clay floor, hearths and post-holes indicating a temporary structure on
site that was frequently visited by hunter-gatherers during the period. The
excavation forms part of the Hawkcombe Head Landscape research strategy of
the ENPA. The field School is funded by the Widening Participation Office
at the University of Bristol and gives 'A' level students a unique hands-on
experience of fieldwork and excavation prior to applying to university. The
students are supervised by postgraduates from the Dept. of Archaeology at

1 Sunday LUGHNASA SKILL FAIR Peat Moors Centre,
Westhay, Glastonbury. 10am-4.30pm A celebration of the ancient Celtic festival
of First Harvest with demonstrations of a range of craft activities. The festival
takes it's name from The Celtic god Lugh who was said to boast that he could
turn his hand to any craft. Being mortal, our crafts people will probably
only demonstrate one at a time! The Centre's new roundhouse will also be under
