Applications are invited from representatives of University Departments and other qualified organisations and persons engaged in archaeological and antiquarian research to be carried out in, or relating to the County of Somerset during the year 2009.
An amount of approximately £4000 in total for the year will be available for distribution. It will be allocated by the Society's Council on the advice of an expert Committee representative of various qualified Organisations and Universities.
Applications should include detailed information on the application form under the following headings:
· A description of the proposed scheme for the year 2009 and, in the case of schemes already in hand, a description of the progress so far achieved.
· An assessment of the archaeological or antiquarian importance of the scheme, in relation to other projects of a like nature.
· Sufficient details of the organisation responsible for, or sponsoring the work, to satisfy the Committee that it will be efficiently and economically conducted and that the results will be published. Also, details of any previous projects or publications.
· A clear and realistic estimate, however approximate, of the probable cost of the work to be carried out in 2009, with separate costing of differing items wherever possible, and
· An indication of any funds likely to be available from other sources. These sources should be stated, because money from the Fund is limited.
· For the Gray Fund, proposals to promote the training or the engagement of amateurs or younger people in archaeology will be considered.
Applications need not be limited to projects of excavation of archaeological sites. Proposals for research by means of field study not involving excavation, for historical research or for the investigation or publication of material already in museums, libraries, Record Offices, and the like will also be entertained. Print and paper costs of final publication will not be met by this grant.
