Grants in 2008

The Fairfield Project. Archaeological training for young people and other local groups at Fairfield Stogursey, incuding instruction in many archaeological processes. The aim is to establish phases of development of the estate to complement the existing detailed survey of the house. A 5-year project now in its 3rd year. Grant of £1450

CHERT (Charterhouse Area Research Team) Grant required towards cost of a data projector to show the results of the extensive research and recording of new sites and other work during 7 years to members and to the public. Grant of £800.


Grants in 2007

Maltwood Fund
Only one application was received from Prof. A.C. King, University of Winchester for a grant of £2000 for equipment hire to support the important Yarwood excavation, (four weeks in 2007). A Roman mosaic pavement of high quality has been found in the villa area. The report of the excavation is proposed as a monograph for SANHS.
Recommendation £2000

Gray Fund
Bath & Camerton Archaeological Society. Grant required for sundry items to preserve the villa footprint and to provide an information board at the Blacklands site. This is an ongoing project with several interesting parts of the site incorporating a Roman building (villa or farmstead) and a mediaeval mill. Recommendation £1125


Maltwood & Gray Fund grants for 2006

Ray Casely asked for a grant for prizes for children taking part in research of the buildings in I.K.Brunel's last project, the West Somerset Railway. This grant has been paid following receipt of evidence of expenditure of the £200 requested.

John Chapman asked for £1,400 to restore the bust of William Beard in Banwell Churchyard. Mr Beard 'managed' Banwell Bone caves 1825-1865. The bust is now restored and the grant claimed. An article in the Mendip Society newsletter acknowledges the help given by the Gray fund (amongst others).

Dr William Stanton requested the cost of one radiocarbon dating of human bones from Brimble Pit Swallet, Westbury-sub-Mendip. A receipt has been received and the grant, of £411.25, has been paid.

Bob Marley asked for a grant for Blagdon Local History Society to top up a donation made by a member to fund a data projector for the use of the Society in educational and display purposes. The projector has been bought and will be in use shortly, initially to showcase the Society's collection of photographs. A receipt for the cost of the equipment was received and the grant of £500 was paid.

Adrian Webb & Ken Atherton asked for a substantial grant to cover travel and photocopying costs during their research into a comprehensive collection of charts, descriptions and views of the Somerset coast. Research is proceeding but no claim has yet been received on the £2000 offered.

Prof. A.C. King, University of Winchester was offered £1500 from the Maltwood Fund for the analysis of Late Iron Age and Roman pottery from Yarford in the expectation of providing a type series for the Vale of Taunton Dean. This work has not yet been completed nor the grant claimed.
