Local History

Local history is a more recent defined interest of the society than archaeology and natural history. The committee plans a farreaching programme of lectures and visits together with an annual symposium which, in recent years, has covered topics as farranging as Tourism in Somerset, Women and Children in Agriculture and Perkin Warbeck in Somerset. When possible we try to include a practical element in our programme such as the impromptu performance of a mummers' play at our most recent symposium, and a social element so that members can get to know each other better. Industrial archaeology often seems to fall within our brief.

We try to support burgeoning local history societies in the county and encourage younger members to join the society. Family history links with local history and we are aware that it has much to contribute to the history of the county. New members interested in local history are asked to make themselves known to members of the committee at meetings.
