BARRINGTON COURT:
THE INVENTION & REINVENTION
OF THE ENGLISH COUNTRY HOUSE

SATURDAY 24 APRIL 2010 9.30am - 5pm

A day conference at Barrington Court in partnership with the National Trust

Barrington Court has a very special relationship to the National Trust. Acquired in 1907, it was its first English Country House. This makes it peculiarly suitable for an exploration of the role of that phenomenon in English heritage. Taking place within the Library of Barrington Court itself, this conference offers the opportunity to explore the standing building and to be guided through the development of the house by three distinguished historical experts, examining in turn the origins of the house in the sixteenth century, the transformations carried out by the Strode family in the seventeenth century, and after neglect and decline, the restoration and transformation of house and gardens in the twentieth century. All of which must make us ask what exactly is the house that we see today, what will it mean to the future, and how do we attempt to understand it?

Programme
9.30 Arrivals
10.00 Nicholas Cooper, The Sixteenth Century House
11.00 Tours of the House
11.30 Coffee
11.45 Dr Robert Dunning, The House the Strodes Built
12.45 Lunch
14.00 Julian Orbach, The Transformation of Barrington in the 20th Century
15.00 Tea
15.15 Round Table Discussion with the National Trust

Speakers
Nicholas Cooper was formerly an officer of the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England. He has published widely and with special expertise on the architectural and cultural history of the English house, notably Houses of the Gentry, 1480-1680 (English Heritage, Yale UP, 1999).
Dr Robert Dunning was formerly Editor of the Victoria County History of Somerset and is well known as a distinguished historian of the county. He is the author of one of the most influential essays on Barrington Court.
Julian Orbach, author of the Blue Guide to Victorian Architecture in Britain, is currently revising the South and West Somerset Volume of Pevsner's Buildings of England.

The cost of the day conference is £20 to include Coffee, Buffet Lunch and Tea

DILLINGTON HOUSE DAY SCHOOL

‘WARTIME DEFENCES IN BLUE ANCHOR BAY’

Saturday 20 March 2010

In the Second World War, Blue Anchor Bay was surprisingly heavily defended against airborne, seaborne, and ground attacks. Construction of defences started in the summer of 1940 and continued throughout 1941. The threats to the beaches and harbours were closely linked with threats from Exmoor and the Brendon Hills. Recent research has uncovered some surprising new aspects of the defences of this area and its importance within the overall Somerset defence plans. English Heritage has already listed two of the unique pillboxes as Grade 2 Listed Buildings.

Our minibus trip visits the key sites where the tutor, David Hunt, will explain the perceived threats and the extensive measures taken to counter them. We will visit the beaches and the defended areas - both inland and on the coast - and see the remains of pillboxes, gun positions, and other defences. Full briefings will be given at each site and, weather permitting, there should be opportunities to walk through some attractive areas and along parts of the coast with splendid views.

Other sites of wartime significance will be passed on the journey from Dillington and within the West Somerset area and these will be explained. The use of a minibus enables us to get to some sites ‘off the beaten track’, minimises ‘doubling back’ over the same ground and provides shelter in the event of bad weather. Our aim is to offer an interesting, informative and enjoyable day out.

David is a retired senior Army officer, with a weapons technical background and a lifetime interest in World War 2, particularly in the South West. Since his retirement, he has been actively researching the war in Somerset in the National Archives, County Record Office and National Monuments Records; together with fieldwork on the ground. He has been exploring the area since his childhood in Taunton and first became interested in defences during a wartime holiday at Blue Anchor.

Fees including transport and packed meals £58
