BARRINGTON COURT: THE INVENTION & REINVENTION OF
THE ENGLISH COUNTRY HOUSE (LH)
A day conference at Barrington Court in partnership with the National Trust
Barrington Court has a very special relationship to the National Trust. Acquired
in 1907, it was its first English Country House. This makes it peculiarly
suitable for an exploration of the role of that phenomenon in English heritage.
Taking place within the Library of Barrington Court itself, this conference
offers the opportunity to explore the standing building and to be guided through
the development of the house by three distinguished historical experts, examining
in turn the origins of the house in the sixteenth century, the transformations
carried out by the Strode family in the seventeenth century, and after neglect
and decline, the restoration and transformation of house and gardens in the
twentieth century. All of which must make us ask what exactly is the house
that we see today, what will it mean to the future, and how do we attempt
to understand it?
